Take any time of the year, there will be millions of people around the globe actively pursuing a losing weight program. Losing unwanted pounds is loaded with obstacles and countless of us go through never-ending frustration.

Trying to lose weight with this dieting program or that, all to no benefit. We’ve got a countless range of extreme diets to pick from: the high protein, vegetarian, low carb, less fat and every combination in between that you can think of.

One of the major setbacks with these diets is, even as you keep losing weight as long as you stick on to a strict schedule of permitted foods, it’s hard to carry on with these menus as a regular diet.

Consequently you may lose the preferred 15 or more pounds, sticking to those ‘permitted’ food, nevertheless the menus soon turn out to be so restrictive and uninteresting, eating becomes more of a ritual than a fulfilling experience.

After we get rid of the unwanted pounds, we are impatient and ready to get back to the usual satisfaction of real eating.

What makes losing weight a continuous effort is, this approach to dieting. As soon as we’ve lost the weight and go back to our normal eating patterns, much to our disappointment those pounds slowly start creeping back.

The real answer to a successful and sustainable weight loss lies in changing our eating habits for good. Are we going to exist on a low-fat, low carb sugarless and high protein starve ourself diet eternally? Enjoying tasty food is one of the great luxuries of life!

Self-control in every single thing is a sensible foundation for the continuous dieter. Sure, losing weight might take a bit longer, but the outcome is more stable. If we deny ourselves of the foods that gives us pleasure, we will undoubtedly lose weight, but it’s more or less a certainty the pounds we lost will be back in another few months. Losing weight on a long term basis require a more rational approach.

My list of food luxuries was in order of my preferences. I integrated these foods I love to enjoy for once a week indulgence that kept me in high spirits on the diet train.

When I made my weekly menus, I checked the calorie counter, adding up to establish how many extra calories my primary indulgences add to. Let’s say my consumption on a weekly basis add up to 600 calories to satisfy my personal indulgences.

Satisfying my palate, while sticking to otherwise healthy foods, made losing weight a slightly slower In the long run, but the ultimate result was a more sustainable diet program for weight loss.

Here’s an example: once a week, I take a huge plate of salad for my evening meal. Which do you think will be preferred and extra enjoyable? An enormous plate of greens, shrimp and veggies, without mouth-watering garnishing, or the same dish of salad with a dash of Thousand Island dressing?

Unquestionably, I was looking forward to enjoy the salad with a little ‘prohibited dressing’. This illustrates that I was more inclined to continue with something delicious rather than food which has little or no appeal.

Losing weight shouldn’t be a grueling Event! Let yourself to indulge in a small amount of luxuries. Be levelheaded and direct your attention on menus with nourishing and healthy foods – with a little fulfillment to boot. Self-control is the main factor to success in weight loss.

I am an overweight teen, a 190 pound 15 year old, and don’t want to go on a traditional diet, but would like to make some healthy lifestyle choices to help with weight loss. Me and my best friend have decided to go to a local gym 4 times a week for 2 hours and swim every friday in the summer. What tips can you give me about easy changes to help me lose weight. PLEASE TAKE IT SERIOUSLY!!

I have lost 40 lbs. in 3 months and I know this will work. Eat small healthy meals every 2-3 hours, eat your last meal 2-3 hours before you go to sleep. Do not starve yourself or your body will go into survival mode where anything you eat will be turned into FAT. This will help you a lot but if you want more results you can exercise 3-4 days a week, include weight training and especially cardio (walking especially running). If you set your mind to lose the weight you will lose it and when you start seeing how good you look you’ll want to keep going.
Good Luck

i go to the gym 5 times a week. i do cardio for 1 hour, weight training for 1/ 2 an hour and go into the sauna for half an hour. although i manage to lose 3kg for the 1st month but now i’m not losing any weight anymore and anyone know why? and can u help me not to think about food? because i also have a bit junk food when i think of food. can anyone help me?

Get the book called "Fit or fat" by Covert Bailey. It explains exercise physiology in terms that people can understand. You are doing a lot of good things here, but I’m guessing you could tweak your routine for more results with less effort.

Weight training is an excellent way to build muscle, which will burn calories for you even while you sleep. If you get into it in detail, you’ll read about the body mass index. The higher percentage of your body mass that is muscle, the higher your metabolism goes. This is why active muscular young men can eat a lot and not get fat. As we age, and get desk jobs etc. we find a thousand different ways every day to conserve our energy and we find that we can no longer burn off all those calories. So we need a good balanced program of quality foods and exercise.

As attractive as six pack abs and big arms might be, the biggest bang for the buck, or in this case exercise minute, is in your legs. Your leg and butt muscles are the largest ones you have and will deliver the most benefit from being exercised. So your cardio exercise is excellent, and if you ever start to burn out on doing an hour a day, taper back rather than quit. Even 20 minutes is very beneficial.

Weight training is a process where you lift weights to tear your muscle fiber, and then you rest and eat nutrients to rebuild the muscle fiber stronger than it was before. So for the weight training portion of your workout, never work the same muscle groups 2 days in a row. do upper body one day and lower body the next. Cardio is okay 5 times a week, as long as you do get some rest at least once or twice a week. Eat a lot of protein and vegatables for weight training. limit simple carbs, like sugars and rice and potatoes etc. Sugars, cut fruit and starches produce profound cravings that snowball out of control very quickly. Try quitting sugar cold turkey for the easiest way to control it.

I am not familiar with the benefits of a sauna, and I suspect they are minimal, compared to excercise and a good diet. Nothing that involves sitting around has ever been shown to be better than excercise and eating healthy food, to the best of my knowledge

The motivation to make and maintain a lifestyle change can wane from time to time, so be sure to talk to friends and family who encourage you, and read about excercise and healthy eating when you start to feel like you might fall off the wagon.

And remember that if you do suffer a set back, and eat a donut or cake or skip the gym or whatever, its not a failure of your program or you, its a setback, its just a small piece of ground to regain. So jump back on the program and forget about it, rather than throwing up your arms and giving up the hard won gains.

Do not focus on spot exercises, like massive numbers of stomach crunches to lose fat in the midsection. Your legs will burn energy from anywhere on your body. Yes, you tend to burn the fat closest to the muscle using it first, but the burn rate is so much better from using your legs than from doing situps that you are much farther ahead doing your cardio to lose the weight, and doing crunches just to sculpt muscle once you can actually see your stomach muscles again.

Lastly, try to find recipies you like for healthy foods. Avoid tricks and gimmicks, they will not last. You want to adopt a permanent healthy eating habit. There are tons of high quality meals low in simple carbs and sugars.

Don’t be afraid of fat content in quality foods. Your body needs to ingest a certain amount of fat to function at its best.

Good luck! Your excellent habit of devoting time to exercise 5 times a week puts you in the very top tier of probability for success.

I weigh 137 pounds and I really want to lose some weight, because I’m extremely embarrassed to go swimming. I know there’s really no "fast" way to lose weight, but what can I do to lose weight? I always drink water instead of sugary drinks, and I do 100 sit-ups and ballet squats before I go to bed every night. Any other important tips and exercises I can do for great results? Oh and I want to lose fat on my stomach, hips, and I want to tone my legs.

1. First start by getting up earlier than usual. Around 5:30 AM to do some of you workouts. Getting up early shocks your metabolism because the body needs more energy to get going. Right? This will start your system on the road to weight loss. That early start with about 10 minutes of stretching. Have a cup of coffee to get the blood going also.

2. Do all the sit-ups you can. Just do them. 15 or 20 whatever, we don’t have a lot of time to work with. Rest 1 minute repeat, do this for 6 sets. Already you are breathing hard and feel worn, because the body is working extra hard at being up earlier and then going right into exercise. If the early morning hour lets you get your cardio in, go ahead and do it. 30 minutes.

3. Diet. Cut all current meal portions in half, just cut them in half, nothing fancy or complicated, CUT IN HALF! Cut out all bread products, all gravies, candies, chips, night snacks, etc. If you crave at night eat a banana, other fruit or best a non-fat yogurt. There are some tasty ones out there.

4. In the evening do another 6 sets of sit-ups maxing out each set. Cardio again. The trick is to stay with getting up earlier. Yes it’s hard, that’s why it is so effective. Why do you think the Army gets up so early, it is intense training to the max.

I have been working a night job which included a lot of physical exercise–stocking the shelves, running from one department of the store to another, etc. It’s my first job in two years–and in the two years I haven’t worked I gained a lot, and I mean A LOT, of weight. Strange thing is I am eating healthier, getting a lot of exercise, but have gained 5 pounds instead of lost weight. Is this just muscle mass or what? What are some things I can do to get the best results in losing a lot of weight?

You probably know that muscle weighs more than fat. If you gain 5 oz. of fat, you might put on a pound. If you gain 5 oz. of muscle, you’ll probably put on 2 or 3 pounds. (It differs for different people’s body masses.) But it sounds like you gained some muscle! Good for you! There’s nothing to be worried about. And before you weigh yourself next time, make sure you don’t drink any liquid for at least 12 hours. Though you do burn liquid with regular, everyday excercises, (and the rest gets flushed down the toilet), by drinking 8 oz. of water, can cause you to temporarily gain a pound.

There are some good tips listed in the answers, here are a few more. Recent studies have shown that having eggs for breakfast will increase energy during the day and act as a natural weight suppressant. Have listed an article on using eggs as a weight loss food. Tracking your daily food intake and daily exercise will help a lot in determining how much you are really eating and working off each day. Have also noted a article that list a few easy ways to work exercise into your routine.

My question is on a few different levels. Please feel free to be longwinded because I really want to learn about this.

I’ve been losing weight over the last 2 months on diet alone. I’ve lost about 12 pounds this way. I understand how this works – you can lose weight by reducing caloric intake and changing the types of foods you eat.

What I want to understand is how exercise makes you lose weight. I have the beginnnings of understanding on this – that you’re burning calories with the exercise…like if you eat 1400 calories in a day and you burn 300 then your body only thinks you have eaten 1100, right?

But then how do all those old calories come off? The ones from three months ago that made me gain weight?

On the same vein, if i’ve only been losing weight with diet (steadily), and then i have one really good workout, when will it be reflected in my weight? I’m not saying I expect to lose all my weight with one workout, I’m trying to simplify the question.

You burn calories at rest. The higher your metabolism, the more calories you will burn while exercising, and the more you will burn at rest, the idea is to raise your metabolism.
If you just QUIT eating, your body will go into starvation mode and think to itself "HEY no food coming in… all systems SLOW down we need to conserve what we’ve got" So you have to eat.

If you have good muscle tone it is your goal not to lose it. You want to gain muscle and lose fat. Muscle also weighs more than fat, so instead of going so much by the ‘scale’, you should be judging progress by how your clothes fit instead.

So a person needs to eat… healthily. Every 4 hours, so you dont have that low blood sugar ‘crashing’ thing going on. No sugar, little fat, a lot of greens and veggies, drink much fluids (64 ounces a day plus an extra 8 ounces for every 20 pounds overweight), a ‘deck of cards’ sized portion worth of protein every day (only one day a week red meat) and complex carbohydrates (whole grains).
IF you are taking in less food than the 2500 calories a person of normal weight would eat, then it is logical to assume you would be taking in less vitamins than you need, SO you need a daily vitamin supplement.
The ideal exercise regimen would include 30 minutes of walking daily, three times a week aerobic training (get heart-rate up)
and two or three times a week weight training. All this can be done at home (without a gym) but a gym with a personal fitness trainer is always nice. Oprah has one, why shouldn’t YOU?
Also don’t forget about:
-stress (dont need that… laughter best medicine, stay in good humor, be happy)
-rest (need to sleep and get those REMs)
-not smoking
-little alcohol or caffiene

I also say that you should do things to make yourself happy, like a nice hair trim (trip to salon for facial manicure pedicure etc.)
buy a nice new shirt every time you lose five pounds and get your teeth bleached at the dentist office.
Good luck on reaching your goal and congratulations on your progress thus far.

I have read that to healthily lose weight you need to lose 1-2 lbs a week. I have started exercising and dieting and am losing it alot faster than that, while I don’t want to complain I am worried about how fast I’m losing it.
I’ve lost over 20lbs in less than a month

A lot of times you lose quite a bit at first and the it tapers off. As long as you are eating healthy, not starving yourself, and aren’t going crazy with the excising, you should be fine.

If you really feel you are losing it too fast you can eat some nuts, they have a lot of fat, but it is a healthy fat.

Remember to drink lots of water, helps you stay full longer, and keeps you hydrated.
